Opera Fuoco’s Young Artist Program was created in 2008 as a platform for young professional singers in France and quickly became the central focus of the company’s activities. It is both a training ground and springboard, giving its members many opportunities to explore diverse repertoire and roles. Studio singers work not only with founder and director, David Stern and head coach, Jay Bernfeld but also with highly regarded vocal soloists and teachers as well as a professional period-instrument orchestra.
- masterclasses and workshops
Every three years, approximately 12 studio singers are selected based on auditions. Master classes and workshops take place in the Paris-area, in collaboration with the Mona Bismarck American Center and the Paul-Marmottan Library of Boulogne and almost always involve an invited coach or coaches. Master classes are usually genre-based, such as French Baroque, German Lied or Italian Bel Canto and take place over the course of 4 days with a final performance. Workshops involve an in-depth musical and dramatic study of a single piece, working with a stage director or choreographer and often in preparation for a larger-scale production.

Young artists can receive individual coachings and guidance from members of both the artistic and administrative team.
Young artists have the opportunity to perform large-scale vocal programs, oratorios, cantatas and operas with David Stern and Opera Fuoco’s period-instrument orchestra. Opera Fuoco studio singers have given concert performances at the Abbaye de Royaumont, the Paris Philharmonie, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Shanghai Symphony Hall. Every two years, Opera Fuoco produces or co-produce a fully staged opera, in collaboration with French and International partners such as the Champs-Elysees Theater, the St. Quentin Theater, the Royal Theater of Versailles, the Salle Ravel in Levallois, the Telemann Center and Theater in Magdeburg, the Malta Baroque Festival and the Bachfest in Leipzig. Currently, Opera Fuoco is in residence at the Salle Ravel of Levallois with three productions per season.

Sara Hershkowitz – former member of the Young Artist Program
David Stern and Jay Bernfeld are revolutionary in their music-making, combining an incredibly high standard with a great sense of humour and humanity. They taught me not only that the essence of music is found within the nuances of the text, but above all through the expression of joy.
Chantal Santon – Former member of the Young Artist Program
David Stern’s perfect understanding of the voice and the vocal repertoire are as exceptional as his generosity and his guidance towards young singers. He reveals the singers’ potential by constantly pushing them beyond their limits.
