Solomon – William Boyce
TITLE
Solomon - A Serenata by William Boyce
ABOUT
Although his name has been largely forgotten, William Boyce received significant recognition during his lifetime from composers such as Handel, Bach and Mozart.
His serenade, Solomon, composed in 1742, was one of the most widely performed works during his lifetime. The work is a lively exchange between a shepherd and a shepherdess. Its two characters, sung by a soprano and a tenor, are simply referred to as "she" and "he" and are joined by a chorus.
The result is a delicious dialogue that paints scenes of sexual desire through images of nature, a delightful detour from much of standard 18th century repertoire.
