Monument de la tragédie grecque Les Trachiniennes de Sophocle immortalise le drame intemporel de la jalousie conjugale. Hercule revient du siège d’Oechalie avec une otage de guerre, la jeune Iole. Face à la belle prisonnière, Déjanire, épouse du héros, est poussée par la jalousie à commettre l’irréparable : tuer l’invincible Hercule avec la tunique empoisonnée du centaure Nessos. Cette intrigue a inspiré à Georg Friedrich Handel une partition d’une grande inventivité qu’il a créée en 1745 à Londres en version concertante. Boudée à la création par le public londonien accoutumé aux oratorios, cette tragédie en musique contient certains des morceaux les plus innovants de Händel, par exemple le choeur « Jealousy infernal pest ».

Contrary to the claims of the reference edition, Hercules is not an oratorio. Handel always wanted it to be considered a musical drama, and thus an opera in English. In order to reinforce the dramatic tension and to give Hercules its operatic colors, David Stern proposes an interpretation based on the original manuscript and the reworkings that Handel made in 1749 and 1752. Opera Fuoco & David Stern collaborate with the Chamber Choir of Namur to celebrate the 2024 Paris Olympic Games by honoring the greatest hero in Greco-Roman mythology.
