Masterclass - The muse of the century
TITLE
The muse of the century
Sarah Bernhardt (1844 - 1923) represents the tragedienne par excellence. Internationally recognized, she inspired some of the greatest writers of her time (Edmond Rostand, Catulle Mendès...) and was admired by great minds such as Victor Hugo, Sacha Guitry or Emile Zola. She gave the "French theater" an international reputation at a time when globalization was still inconceivable.
Although she made only one appearance into music as a recitalist in Gabriel Pierné's Izéÿl, Sarah Bernhardt lived through an era of great change for music and frequented many musicians and librettists. She was a friend of Gounod, Saint-Saëns and Debussy.
ater that were almost immediately set to music. La Tosca, Gioconda, Dona Sol, Gismonda and Fedora, were born with the theatrical play before being immortal in the creations of Puccini, Verdi and Giordano.
Inspired by the muse that was Sarah Bernhardt, this master class will trace her career in music. It is also an opportunity for the singers of the Opera Fuoco Young Artists Program to lend their voices to the great opera pages in Italian and French and to rediscover the fabulous energy that inhabited Sarah Bernhardt.
