The fairytale in German opera

German fairytales and legends provided a rich source of inspiration for 19th-century composers such as Märschner, Weber, Lortzing and Wagner who crafted some their finest works from this fertile fabric. Let’s enter the woods with Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel, nibble on the gingerbread house and confront witches, fairies and goblins in pursuit of the evening star and its gentle comfort.

In this masterclass, David Stern has invited director Karen Stone to explore the deep fairytale forests of this repertoire.
